The East African Community observers have raised concerns over the absence of the political party agents at the point of verifying voters.

While presenting the mission’s report to the media, EAC observers chairperson Jakaya Kikwete stated that party agents were placed too far from the verification points.

“It is the opinion of East African Community observers that party agents were placed too far from the polling officials who were identifying voters,” Kikwete said.

In all the poling stations observed, agents of political parties and independent candidates signed the result declaration form and were given copies

According to the mission, this made it difficult for party agents to ascertain the authenticity of the voters.

The mission however noted that the electoral process was generally peaceful despite the isolated incidences of insecurity which were swiftly contained by the police.

The report also confirmed that the process was conducted according to regulations.

“In all the poling stations observed, agents of political parties and independent candidates signed the result declaration form and were given copies,” Kikwete said.

He added: “Generally, the mission was pleased to note that protocols and procedures for opening and closure of poling were observed.”
