Kisumu County Assembly Speaker Elisha Oraro has urged school heads to facilitate students to acquire national identity cards.

Mr Oraro said there are a number of Form Three and Four students who are eligible to acquire the documents, and could be held up in schools, denying them the opportunity to get the cards.

According to Oraro, with the ongoing mass voter registration, his office will liaise with schools to ensure the eligible students get the ID cards, so as to enable them register as voters before the end of the mass voter registration.

Speaking at an event where Kisumu County  Government distributed the first tranche of the 2021-2022 scholarship and bursary funds to the vulnerable scholars amounting to Sh102,500,000, the Speaker urged the school principals to avail the students who are over 18 years of age for the exercise.

“We are going to send the IEBC officials to the institutions  to register the students who are eligible to vote,” he said.

According to the speaker, issuing of identity cards now takes three days, and with this, those who apply immediately are able to acquire the IDs  and register as voters.

With a huge number of secondary school students not registered as voters, members of the public were urged  to assist in voter mobilization as they target a large turnout for the August polls.

Concerns were also raised over a heap of uncollected identity cards at the national administration offices.

The County Government promised to work hand in hand with the IEBC officials to ensure massive voter registration at the grassroot level.

The ongoing voter registration will come end on February 6.
