Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has pledged to elevate Kisumu National Polytechnic to a technical university if he is re-elected.

Speaking during an engagement forum with youths from the county on Thursday, Nyong’o said the institution was doing well under the new leadership and council and deserved an upgrade.

The event was held at Tom Mboya Labour College.

The Shift

The Governor said that this will see degree and masters programmes offered in the institution.

We don’t have to do away with any courses offered, it will just be upgraded to offer higher levels like degree and masters for the students

“The polytechnic is doing well both in terms of management, training and producing competent graduates,” said Nyong’o.

He went ahead to state, “We don’t have to do away with any courses offered, it will just be upgraded to offer higher levels like degree and masters for the students.”

Just as counties like Laikipia, Nairobi, and Kirinyaga have universities, Kisumu should have its own, we request that you make it happen once you resume office, make Kisumu Polytechnic a University

The pledge followed a request by Kisumu youth leader Alison Oguk who urged the Governor to turn the institution to University.

“Just as counties like Laikipia, Nairobi, and Kirinyaga have universities, Kisumu should have its own, we request that you make it happen once you resume office, make Kisumu Polytechnic a University,” said Oguk.

He noted that it will also enable the institution to specialize in engineering, technology and science, and thereby accrue more resources.

Kisumu Polytechnic

The polytechnic which started as a technical secondary school in 1967, aims at producing human resource competent in the application of technical skills.

At least  4,021 graduates were awarded various certificates from higher diploma, diploma, craft and artisan courses during the 2022 graduation ceremony.

With only ten days to the polls, Nyong’o seeks to get a second term in office.

He will be contesting against his major rival Jack Ranguma of MDG.
