Professor Gordon Wayumba is the latest entrant into Kisumu gubernatorial race with his main agenda being teaching residents to fish.

Prof Wayumba who unsuccessfully vied for the seat in the 2017 general election at the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party primaries.

But in a restrategized run, Wayumba who is a Senior lecturer at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) has hit the ground, drumming up support ahead of the party primaries.

Wayumba has been traversing the county, where he is meeting residents and party delegates, with the aim of selling his policies.

“We do not know which method the party will use for the primaries, but ours is to ensure that our team is popular both with the people, the delegates, and the party,” said Wayumba.

In an exclusive interview with Lake Region bulletin, Professor Wayumba noted that his intention is to provide a strong economic policy which will replace the handout mentality which has engulfed the area.

“Handouts are not sustainable. We have to come up with policies which ensure that people are empowered to earn a decent living,” said Wayumba.

He added: “I am not a handout person. Instead of giving people fish, I want to teach them how to fish because this is the most sustainable and decent way of earning a living.”

Wayumba, a land surveyor also pointed out that he will ensure more investment in education sector to ensure more Kisumu residents gain skills.

“As a university lecturer, I am pained to see the number of our people enrolling in universities going down. Despite County Governments having been confined to pre-primary and technical institutions, we must do something to ensure more people get university education,” he said.

The resident of Nyahera in Kisumu West Sub County has exuded confidence that he is best placed to dethrone Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o who will be trying to defend his seat.

Other people who have expressed interest for the seat include Chief Administrative Secretary ken Obura, Former Governor Jack Ranguma and Senator Fred Outa.

“The people of Kisumu have seen what each of my competitors have done, and we want them to make the right decision. Should I miss the ODM party ticket, I will support the party in the capacity I shall be in,” said Wayumba.
