IEBC urges ODPP to probe the Jacaranda grounds violence

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC has castigated acts of violence witnessed during Kenya Kwanza campaign held at Jacaranda Grounds on 19th June 2022.

The electoral body has slammed the perpetration of the shameful acts of violence that endangered the lives of Kenyans.

Chaos erupted between the rowdy youths, forcing the rally to end prematurely.

Under the ordinary circumstance, the commission would have been in a pole position to summon the perpetrators of heinous violence.

Regrettably, the high court declaration of the electoral code of conduct enforcement committee unconstitutional renders the commission toothless to act.

In the commission’s statement, it is only the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) that has the power to order and prosecute political offences.

This is under Section 21 of the election offences act.

The commission urged the ODPP to investigate and prosecute those behind political violence witnessed at Jacaranda grounds.

IEBC also called upon political parties and candidates to exercise their campaigns peacefully.

The commission also reminded candidates to adhere to their campaign schedules as submitted to Returning Officers.
