Former Kisumu County Secretary Humphrey Okuku Nakitari has joined the race for Matayos Constituency parliamentary position on Azimio ticket.

Mr Nakitari was last week among the senior government officials who quit public service to face electorates in the forthcoming August 9, polls.

Ahead of his resignation, Mr Nakitari was a senior officer at the Interior Ministry headquarters in Nairobi.

Mr Nakitari has had a long spell in public service, starting off as a District Officer in 1994. He later rose to District Commissioner and served in Turkana, Kuria, and Sotik where he is credited for restoring calm following the post election violence in 2007 .

In 2013, he was appointed Kisumu’s pioneer County Secretary, a position he held until 2017, under Governor Jack Ranguma.

He takes credit for the structuring of the county’s first public service, and introducing strict policies strengthening service delivery, and was part of the team that laid foundation for the present Kisumu docio‐economic development.

My agenda for Matayos’

Speaking to Lake Region Bulletin, Nakitari said he will be running on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket.

He said his main agenda is economic transformation of the constituency which covers the busy Busia town the main border point between Kenya and Uganda.

“We must have systems put in place to escalate business in the area, as opposed to current situation where trucks lie for days along the roads, due to slow clearance processes. A situation not conducive for international trade,” he said.

He said Busia, being a cosmopolitan town, there is need to have economic inclusion so as to have everyone on board.

He pointed out insecurity as another key area he will focus on, adding that this will ensure the small businesses thrive.

“We want to work with women and youths on areas of innovation, so as to give them an opportunity to grow and create employment opportunities,” said Nakitari
