How a simple thirst earned Kisumu man Sh1 million

It was a normal Saturday afternoon for Willy Mmach at his small retail shop in Otonglo, Kisumu West.

As he usually does in hot afternoons, he picked a 300ml soda, and began to sip sparingly as he served his customers.

And while sipping, he remembered to send the codes in the lid of the soda to 40111, in an ongoing competition by the Coca Cola company.

He was familiar with this process as he had entered the competition numerous times before. Little did he know that this was his day with destiny.

The following day, while at his usual workplace, Mr Mmach received this heartwarming call from the company informing him that he was one of the Sh1 million lucky winners.

“I could not believe it, as I had never handled such a huge sum of money in my entire life,” said Mmach.

This however became a reality for Mmach on August 6, when he was officially unveiled in a colourful first class event at the Recheudome Coca-Cola Depot, off Nyerere Road, in Kisumu where locals and the press scampered to have a picture of him.

Mr Mmach was chauffeured in a high end Toyota Prado all the way from Otonglo, complete with a convoy of more than five vehicles with dancers, where he was received by Coca Cola’s Nyanza Regional Trade Marketing Manager Phoebe Jakoyo and Recheudome Director Peter Omedi

“Despite numerous attempts and entries into the competition, I never gave up. I used to win Sh50 and Sh100 but I am glad that I am among the winners who won Sh1 million,” Mmach, a father of five told the press.

He plans to to purchase a parcel of land and begin constructing family house.

Kachingching na Coke Promotion

According to Ms Jakoyo, the 13-week campaign kicked off on May 20, 2024 and will end on August 20, 2024, with Sh6 million still up for grabs.

“We still have six millionaires to go and you could be our next lucky winner,” she said.

The Coca-Cola company has been running a new nationwide promotion dubbed “Kachingching na Coke” that offers consumers a chance to cash prizes ranging from Sh50 to Sh10,000 delivered straight to the winner’s mobile money wallet.

Kenyans seeking to participate in the campaign are usually required to purchase any Coca-Cola beverage in a 200ml, 300ml, or 500ml returnable glass bottle.

They then need to look under the crown for a unique code, and then SMS the code for free to 40111.
