President Uhuru Kenyatta has issued another address on the high cost of living in the country.

While addressing the nation on Wednesday, Kenyatta ordered the price of maize floor to be retailed at Ksh100 effective immediately.

The President however warned politicians against politicizing the situation.

Crisis

Kenyatta said the political class is not free from blame as they shamelessly manipulate the crisis for self gain.

While cooperate citizens have the right to make profits, they also should exercise a corresponding social responsibility to the people of this republic who make it possible for them to do business

President Kenyatta

“It is so unfortunate and shocking that we in the political class have the audacity to politicize the misery of the most vulnerable in our society,” he said.

He further added that it is even more distasteful to politicize the crises without attempting to offer solution yet the prices of maize floor has been on the rise since 2013.

“Every election in our country has attracted unga crises. Months to the 2013 election, the price of unga shot from Sh70 to Sh130 while in 2017 it rose to Sh189 and Sh205 in 2022,” he said.

The worrying trend

The trend, he added, is linked to the cooperate class who he said had developed socially unethical behaviors.

He said: “While cooperate citizens have the right to make profits, they also should exercise a corresponding social responsibility to the people of this republic who make it possible for them to do business.”

Kenyatta added that the damage resulting from the high prices is usually highest among cooperate citizens as witnessed in many countries.

He called on the government, cooperate citizens and the political class to exercise high civic responsibility.
