On Wednesday 30th March, 2022 the new Uhuru Business Park Market Complex was opened to Kisumu traders.
The Sh.600 million ultramodern market which was designed to accommodate 5, 000 traders has only been having a handful of businesses running.
Most of the traders have been operating along Mosque Road just outside the market.

Many of the traders had abandoned the market for the dusty roadside which was originally occupied by juakali artisans.
This could however end soon following an order by the Governor to move the traders back to the market.
“Henceforth, no trader will be allowed to operate in the streets,” read the notice in part.
“We will ensure all traders are settled inside the Uhuru Business Park,” furthered the Governor.
According to Nyong’o trading in the streets is not only unhealthy but exposes the traders to various hazards.

He further directed that traders who were allocated stalls but have not occupied them will be given public notices to either move in or lose the stalls.
While issuing a warning to the cartels Nyong’o also noted that Department of Trade will use the biometric system to ensure smooth settlement of traders.
“We will deal firmly with cartels who have been harassing traders and allocating themselves stalls without following due process,” he said.
The market was constructed to accommodate the disorganized street vendors who caused disorder in the city.
