Kisumu has been picked to host the 11th edition of the Water Sports Companies Organizers (WASCO) games set for April.

The annual event brings together workers drawn from the over 40 water services providers across the country in a bonding and learning session.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the event did not take place in 2020 and 2021, after the 10th edition which took place in Embu in 2019.

The event organizers have been in Kisumu to begin the preparation for the event to be hosted by Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) from 18th to 22nd April.

WASCO Chairman Peter Kamau who chaired the preparatory meetings

“Water is partly a devolved function, hence we are looking to work with other stakeholders like the national and county governments in the preparation of this event,” said Kamau.

During the 2019 event, the event attracted 14 disciplines, and 2, 000 people participating.

“This means a huge business to traders in Kisumu, in terms of meals, accommodation and other social amenities,” he said.

Some of the venues which will host the various disciplines include; Kisumu National Polytechnic, Aga Khan Hall, Social Hall, among other venues.

He said the official opening ground will be communicated at a later date, after the ongoing consultations.

Some of the games will include; football, volley ball, netball, ajwa, draft, chess, scrabble, darts, pool and badminton.

Mr Kamau noted that the aim of the event is to bring cohesion in the water sector, and provide a platform for the workers to learn from each other.

“We always treat this forum as a learning experience, as we come to share. People from various companies find out the good practices from the other companies,” he said, noting that one key area of concern is non-revenue water, which is a big challenge to the many waster services providers.

Mr Kamau was accompanied by his Secretary General Joseph Kihara, and other members of the National Delegates Conference.
