At least 200, 000 Kisumu City residents are at risk of suffering impacts of the predicted flooding late this year.
This has been disclosed by City Manager Abala Wanga.
Mr Wanga on August 12, in a press conference, noted that the city management has already embarked on extensive preparations for mitigation of the impacts of the floods.
According to Wanga, the ongoing preparations include; mapping vulnerable communities, improving drainage systems, strengthening early-warning mechanisms and setting up emergency response measures.
“At the household level, we are mapping out potential evacuation centers where residents affected by flooding can seek shelter,” said Wanga.
The centers are expected to be equipped with essential supplies, including food, mattresses and other sleeping materials, while medical care and sanitation services will also be put in place to support displaced families during the rainy period.
Some of the areas targeted for the interventions include; Nyamasaria, Dunga, parts of Mamboleo, Manyatta A and B, areas towards Kibos and parts of the Central Business District.
The proposed interventions within River Nyamasaria involves widening and improving the river’s capacity to accommodate water from surrounding streams that contribute to flooding.
“We are prepared, but we will deal with other disaster issues that El Nino will bring as we proceed said Wanga.
