Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has signed  County Bursary and Scholarships Act, 2024.

The Act which replaces the previous Homa Bay County Education Bursary Fund Act, 2015 aims to enhance the management and administration of educational funds in the county.

The Act comes with new and unique processes which will simplify the application and approval for bursaries and scholarships to be implemented through a streamlined and paperless system.

This new act introduces innovative scholarship programs such as the Vocational Training Centre scholarship, known as Fundi Mang’ula, and the Fins to Swim Scholarship

The act also decentralises application and appraisal process for applicants to the village clusters in what Wanga said was aimed at upholding the principles of Citizen Participation as enshrined in Chapter 10(2a)of the Kenyan constitution.

“This new act introduces innovative scholarship programs such as the Vocational Training Centre scholarship, known as Fundi Mang’ula, and the Fins to Swim Scholarship,” said Wanga.

In her quest to improve quality and accessible education since assuming office, Wanga noted that over 540 Form One students and 600 Fundi Mang’ula beneficiaries have received a total of Sh210 million in educational support.

Wanga observed that the new act heralds a new chapter as it covers school-going students in secondary schools, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, Certificate and Diploma colleges, as well as universities.

“These forums will play a crucial role in decision-making regarding the allocation of educational funds, ensuring transparency and accountability in the distribution process,” she said.
