Teenage Pregnancies: Ida, Wanga challenge parents to take responsibility

Ida Odinga, the wife of Azimio leader Raila Odinga has decried early childhood pregnancy and high drop out rate among girls.

She decried the vice blaming parents for neglecting their responsibilities to nuture young girls to become responsible.

Speaking in Nyakach during the Nyakach Ladies and Ambassadors cultural fair, Ida appealed to the professionals to start offering guidance to school girls as well as sex education and social media usage.

Ida said sex education will reduce the cases of early pregnancies.

“When a girl gets pregnant at an early age,she is affected both physically and mentally,” she said.

“They drop out of school and even if they go back things are never the same,” furthered Ida.

Crisis

According to Ida, several factors contribute to the high cases of teenage pregnancies.

She blamed irresponsible men who take advantage of young school going girls by giving them money in exchange of sex.

“Our young girls must be educated and we must come out and protect them,” she said.

She also urged the girls to focus on developing themselves.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga noted that there were a number of teenage pregnancies across the Counties and urged proffessionals to take up the lead role in naturing the girl child.

“We have a very big crisis at our hand, it pains me to see teenage mothers whenever I visit the hospitals,” she said.

“Am appealing to our men to help us end this vice,” furthered Wanga.

Streamlining issues

She told the proffessionals to start at the community level and act to streamline these issues.

The fair in Katito brought together
Daughters of Nyakach to celebrate their achievements and milestones.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Owili while calling for unity lauded the women for their efforts to put their area on the map.

Joining the ocassion were host MP Aduma Owuor, Phoebe Asiyo, musician Suzzana Owiyo among others
