Various media stakeholders have condemned the recent surge in attacks on journalists.
While commemorating World Press Freedom Day, Kenya Media Sector in collaboration with the Kenya Correspondents Association, the media organization said that it is concerned by the rising cases of attacks on journalists.
“The safety and well-being of journalists are of utmost importance to us. The recent escalation of attacks against journalists is not only unacceptable but also hinders the democratic process and undermines press freedom,” said KCA Chairman Oloo Janak.
Anti-Government Protests
This comes in the wake of the opposition-led demonstrations aimed at initiating a dialogue with the government, during which more than 25 journalists were injured.
The attacks on journalists have been multifaceted, with incidents involving security agencies, political supporters, and even political leaders.

Verbal and physical assaults, as well as online harassment and trolling, have become commonplace, causing grave concern within the media community.
KCA also called upon authorities to take immediate action to safeguard journalists and ensure their ability to report freely and without fear.
To bolster their efforts, the media sector has engaged the expertise of private lawyers and partnered with various civil society organizations to combat the attacks.
World Press Freedom Day
World Press Freedom Day is an annual observance celebrated on May 3 to raise awareness about the importance of freedom of the press.
It also aims to uphold the right to freedom of expression and free press.
This year marks the 30th anniversary with the theme for World Press Freedom Day being “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights”. According to UNESCO, the theme signifies the ‘enabling element of freedom of expression to enjoy and protect all other human rights’.
