Hosts Cameroon beat Burkina Faso 2-1 in the opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations with a dramatic comeback.

The visitors took an early lead in the 24th minute before Cameroon’s captain Vincent Aboubakar scored twice from the penalty spot to complete the comeback.

The third Cameroonian goal was dismissed for an offside after referee Mustapha Ghorbal consulted the VAR.

Gustsavo Sangare got the home fans worried but the visitors lost the lead soon after Frank Zombo was brought down by Aston Villa’s Bertrand  Traore in the penalty area which got Cameroon the equaliser.

Three minutes into the first half injury time, Aboubakar gave Cameroon the leading goal from the same spot.

The tournament officially kicked off in Olembe Stadium with a short opening ceremony led by Cameroon president Paul Biya and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

After a three year delay the coronavirus still pose a threat for the tournament as global cases increase.

In other games Cape Verde thrashed Ethiopia with a 1-0 victory to join Cameroon on top of the group A standings.

Cameroon face Ethiopia as Burkina Faso takes on Cape Verde in the next match.
