Kenya to introduce Mwalimu Awards for best performing teachers

The Teachers Service Commission(TSC) is expected to roll out a ‘Mwalimu Award’ program.

President Uhuru Kenyatta gave a node to the program is aimed at recognizing well performing teachers in the country.

TSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Nancy Macharia made the announcement during the release of 2021 KCSE results.

She said TSC had tabled the proposal to the President.

“I am happy to announce that President Uhuru Kenyatta has today graciously accepted the commission’s proposal to introduce a Mwalimu Award,” Dr Macharia said.

Institutionalizing the award

Macharia said the commission will work with relevant officers to explore modalities of institutionalizing the award within existing policies and legal framework.

“We wish to thank the President profusely for this incredible honour that is a clear testimony of his appreciation of the teacher’s role,” she said.

Dr Macharia further urged teachers to tighten their belts even as they welcome 2021 KCPE candidates to form one.

The CEO said the commission is keen to ensure the 100 percent transition policy succeeds to guarantee all children basic right to Education.
