7000 KCPE candidates from disadvantaged family backgrounds in Bungoma County are set to benefit from the Governor’s Scholarship Program this year.

According to Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati, the aim of the project is to ensure many pupils from the county are facilitated to join form one.

In 2020, our children did us proud more than the previous years. We therefore also considered this and saw it fit to increase the number of beneficiaries

The students were shortlisted after vetting 8000 applications which were made by the residents.

“This year, we received a total of 8000 applications for the program and we have successfully undertaken the vetting process which we completed last week,” he said.

“We are waiting for a few conclusions from the Department of Education before we formally unveil the beneficiaries and wish them well as they transit to high school,” he furthered.

The Governor was speaking in Maeni Village in Kimilili Sub-county during a thanks giving ceremony for Kennedy Lukoye who was appointed as village administrator under the county government plan.

Wangamati attributed the increase in the number of beneficiaries set to be sponsored this year to an improvement in the overall performance of the 2020 candidates.

“In 2020, our children did us proud more than the previous years. We therefore also considered this and saw it fit to increase the number of beneficiaries,” said Wangamati.

The Governor refuted claims by his political opponents that dismissed the scholarship program.
