Conjestina defies odds bounces back to boxing ring after 10 years

Kenyan boxing champion, Conjestina Achieng has made a triumphant return to the ring after years of battling mental health issues.

In a boxing match organized by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko in Mombasa, Conjestina showcased her passion and talent once again.

The event aimed to reignite her love for boxing after undergoing treatment at the Mombasa Women Empowerment rehabilitation centre.

Sonko expressed his honor in attending the friendly match between Conjestina Achieng and Fatuma Zarika, two of Kenya’s best female boxers.

“Earlier today (Sunday), I was honored to attend a friendly boxing match I organized in conjunction with Mombasa Women rehab between two of the best female boxers Kenya has ever produced, Conjestina Achieng and Fatuma Zarika,” tweeted Sonko.

Set backs

Conjestina’s journey to this moment has been marked by personal challenges and set backs.

Ten years ago, financial and mental health issues led to the abrupt end of her boxing career.

Throughout her rehabilitation journey, Conjestina has shown incredible physical and mental strength. Her unwavering commitment to better herself has inspired many youths that were almost giving up in life

In September 2022, she was admitted to the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Hospital in Miritini, and her health and mental status deteriorated over time.

It was then that Mike Sonko came to her aid, providing boxing equipment and enrolling her in rehabilitation centers in Nairobi and Diani Beach.

After eleven months of rehabilitation, Conjestina’s recovery appears to be on the right track. Photos shared by Sonko depict her back in the boxing ring, symbolizing her determination and resilience.

Sonko commended her remarkable physical and mental strength, emphasizing how she has inspired many young people who were on the brink of giving up in life.

“Throughout her rehabilitation journey, Conjestina has shown incredible physical and mental strength. Her unwavering commitment to better herself has inspired many youths that were almost giving up in life,”he said.

Conjestina Achieng’s return to boxing serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of a fighter.

Her story will undoubtedly continue to inspire others facing similar challenges, offering hope and determination to overcome adversity
