93 per cent of Kisumu’s population know their HIV status.
The figure which was released during Star Hospital medical camp also ranked Kisumu second having most number of HIV infections in Kenya.
Kisumu Central Sub County Medical Officer Dr.Abiero Joram said statistics show having close to 124,465 patients with HIV/AIDS.
Awareness
This is 15.6% of the total population.

Dr. Abiero applauded the Community Health Workers for their efforts in creating awareness of the virus to people in the community level.
He further said that they have put up several mitigation policies to help control spread of the virus.

Strategies
Other strategies used of pre-exposure profeluxies where the people who are at high risk of contacting HIV are given a highly active antiviral therapy before they engage in sexual activities.
Health workers who are also at risk of contracting the disease are also placed in the same programmes to protect them against AIDS.
Dr.Joram also mentioned the prevention of mother to child transmission and said they are looking into the life of the mothers and they are tested for the virus as soon as possible.
This is to be able to curb the disease from reaching the infant in the case the mother tests positive.
