IEBC issues date for Bungoma Senatorial by election

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has gazetted the date for the Bungoma senatorial by-election.

This follows the election of Moses Wetangula as the Speaker of the National Assembly.

According to notice, the by-election will now take place on December 8, 2022.

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati further added that five other by-elections will take place on the same date.

All candidates who had been cleared to participate in this election prior to the 9th August General Election to verify their details and documents with the respective Returning Officer on or before the nomination days

The elections will be in Ololmasani, Kyome/Thaana, Utawala, Mumias North and South Gem Wards in Narok, Kitui, Nairobi City, Kakamega, and Siaya County Assemblies respectively will take place on the same date.

The commission also stated that all political parties planning to run in the by-elections must submit the names of their candidates by October 13.

Chebukati further instructed interested candidates to double-check their information before nomination days and present their credentials to the respective Returning Officers.

“All candidates who had been cleared to participate in this election prior to the 9th August General Election to verify their details and documents with the respective Returning Officer on or before the nomination days,” read part of the statement.

“Disputes arising from the nominations shall be determined within ten days of the lodging of the dispute to the Commission not later than Monday 21, November, 2022.”

Political parties and independent candidates, should before November 24, submit names of their polling stations, constituency and county agents to the commission.

The aspirants

At least five candidates have expressed interest in the Bungoma senatorial seat.

Among the are former Bumula MP Mwambu Mabonga, Jacob Machacha Majembe who is a former aide of former minister Fred Gumo.

Bishop Harman Kasili who is the chairman of the Lake Region Economic Bloc, Wetangula’s aid Wafula Wakoli and Agfrey Mutuma Namisi will also beeking to replace Wetangula.
