A total of 2954 Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) in Homa Bay county will now be entitled to receive a monthly stipend of Sh 2000 plus monthly National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) subscription from the County Government of Homabay.
This is a step aimed to boost the morale of the CHVs and to ensure most of the health issues are tackled from the households within the communities.
Addressing the press on the status of health affairs in Homabay county, the Chief Exercutive Officer Health Dr Kevine Osuri emphasized the important role played by the CHVs in improving the health indicators in the county.
“Homabay county being one of the counties covered by Community Units (CUs), the strategy of using CHVs will help us a great deal in improving the health services especially at the community level,” said Osuri.

Sub county visits
He stated that Her Excellency the Governor Gladys Wanga has scheduled for Sub Counties visit with CHVs to have a conversation and task them with clear health objectives and indicators.
“Our CHVs will be tasked to help us reduce teenage pregnancies, increasing hospital deliveries, immunization among other health indicators,” stated Osuri.
“Our CHVs are the backbone of our health system and we are grateful for the work they are doing,” he emphasized.

Osuri also indicated their commitment to increase NHIF membership registration among the residents of Homabay saying that they have managed to increase the number to 20% from 5% in the last six months.
“With the CHVs enrollment to NHIF, the number will now go up and we are targeting to raise the number to 65 per cent in the whole county,” he said.
“This is to enable our people to be able and capable to foot the medical bills in case of health eventuality,” he added.
Osuri also confirmed that they have ensured that all the facilities in the county are NHIF accredited.
