Stress can cause skin damage

Share post:

Countless number of times we are in one way or another caught in a stressful situation.

According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF);stress is a common feeling we get when under pressure, overwhelmed or unable to cope with a certain situation.

This is caused by various situations including loss of jobs , marital stress , death of a close relative ,pressure at work among many others.

Skin and Stress

There are two major types of stress ;Acute stress and Chronic stress .

Symptoms in acute stress develop quickly and do not last long while chronic stress is constant and persists over an extended period of time.

The human body is designed to fight any threats to the body and therefore an overreacting to this threat causes stress to the body which in turn caused unwanted skin changes .

When the mind or body is distressed ,the brain induces release of Cortisol which is a stress hormone through the adrenal glands .

The skin in turn has receptors to these hormones which then cause the skin disorder.

Due to the production of these hormone the skin can have increased inflammation, more oil and sebum production and impaired resistance to infections.

This then leads to the development of acne , hair loss, scalp rash and hives on the skin .

Management

Although we might face stressful situations ,there is still need to look after our skin and help maintain its radiance throughout.

This is achievable by not neglecting the skin ,doing regular exercise , getting enough sleep drinking plenty of water and maintaining a healthy diet.
