Residents of Siaya County have been cautioned against selling farm produce at throwaway prices as harvesting begins.

Governor James Orengo instead urged residents to keep stock for the right time and sell it at better prices.

Orengo noted that the county has registered a bumper compared to neighboring counties, attributing this to mechanization of agriculture, provision of certified seeds, soil sampling, revamp of ecological farming, and observing rainfall patterns in the wake of climate change.

The Governor noted that Bondo, Gem, Alego-Usonga, Ugunja, Ugenya, and Rarieda Sub Counties registered high yields following the efforts put in place by the County Government.

He however lamented that some people have started selling their maize below Sh100 per two-kilo tin, directing county officials to intervene and save the farmers.

He noted that the county government is working on plans to buy the maize, and store, to avert food shortage in the near future.

Kevin Osido from Rarieda Sub County noted that poverty was pushing people to sell their produce as most people depend on farm produce to sort out some emergency issues like school fees.
