A bodaboda rider has died while his pillion passenger and a truck driver are receiving treatment following an accident at Mabanga market, Bungoma County.

The Wednesday morning accident involving a trailer, a matatu and a motorcycle along Webuye-Malaba highway was blamed on the matatu driver.

Witnesses said the matatu which was overlapping to avoid the jam caused by trailers parked along the road was hit by one of the trailers, before the matatu veered off the road, hitting the motorcyclist.

According to Bungoma Sub County Police Commander Benjamin Kimwele, the accident was a manifestation of the anarchy on the Webuye-Busia Highway due to the many trucks that have been forced to park by the roadside.

“The trucks have taken one side of the road leaving the highway to be a single-lane road,” he explained.

He however noted that arrangements have been initiated to hasten the protocols at Malaba border to facilitate movement of the trucks.

“The deceased’s body has been taken to Bungoma County Hospital Mortuary while his passenger, a woman and the truck driver are receiving treatment at the Bungoma County Referral Hospital,” he added.

The situation on the Webuye-Busia Highway has remained critical for close to a week following slowed clearance of the trucks at the Uganda border due to Covid-19 regulations.
