“Kenya has periodically experienced some pre-electoral violence during election cycles,” read the communication in part.

It went on: “Election-related demonstrations and rallies regularly take place in the runup to the election and are likely to continue, at times blocking key intersections and causing traffic jams.”

“Demonstrations may occasionally be violent, requiring police intervention.  Strikes and other protest activities related to economic conditions occur regularly.”

Kisumu; violence hotspots

The US pointed out Kisumu as one of the violence hotspots, advising its citizens to avoid the place which is the home city of one of the leading presidential candidates Raila Odinga.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the Embassy has imposed movement restrictions on personnel in Kisumu,” the statement read.

The communication went ahead to advise the US citizens to among other things avoid showing opulence, which would make them targets for criminals.

“Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive jewelry or watches,” read the communication.

Be aware of your surroundings, be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs, review your personal security plans and have travel documents up to date and easily accessible,
