The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will use biometric system of identification to verify voters in the August polls.

The commission plans to use the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kits to identify and verify voters.

Speaking during the presidential candidates meeting, IEBC Chief Executive Officer Hussein Marjan said the commission will use the similar system used in 2017.

The retrieved information will then be used, by having the voters scan their fingers in again for a crosscheck of their details in the Kiems kit

The system requires voters to use their fingerprints for identification.

“The system will maintain a count and tally of those who have voted,” said Marjan.

“The retrieved information will then be used, by having the voters scan their fingers in again for a crosscheck of their details in the KIEMS kit,” he furthered.

The Kits

The commission had purchased 45,000 kits but an audit of the kits revealed that 41,000 are in good condition.

The commission further purchased 14,100 more kits to be used in the August polls.

In case the kits fail IEBC says it will use the Alphanumeric search.

The search requires the voter’s identification number (ID) to be scanned on its backside and uses it to retrieve their true identity from the KIEMS kits.
