Maseno University Professor held for allegedly assaulting colleague

Police in Kisumu are holding Maseno University lecturer for allegedly assaulting a colleague.

Professor Charles Ochola was on Monday evening nabbed by police and detained at Kisumu Central Police Station.

The don who also doubles up as the Principal of Tom Mboya University College was alleged to have assaulted Dr Stephen Onyango.

Dr Onyango is Maseno University Academic Staff Union (UASU) Branch Secretary.

As a person of interest, we summoned the professor to assist with the investigations,

Kisumu Central Sub County Police Commander Anthony Maina confirmed that the don was actually being held at the station.

He however said Professor Ochola had been summoned as part of the investigation into the matter.

“As a person of interest, we summoned the professor to assist with the investigations,” said Maina.

Dr Onyango had on May 7, made a report at the Central Police Station Occurrence Book Number 03/07/05/22 at 0100hours that he was assaulted by the colleague.

Disciplinary process

Sources from the university said the misunderstanding between Prof Ochola and Dr Onyango begun following an ongoing disciplinary procedure.

Dr Onyango was accused of posting inciting message in a WhatsApp group of academic staff in relation to management of examination.

The message is said to have rubbed the university management the wrong way, leading to the disciplinary procedure.

Dr Onyango claimed that Prof Ochola who is part of the management accosted him in Kisumu, and attacked him over the matter.

Dr Onyango told Lake Region Bulletin that he chose to take the matter with the police to avoid any further physical engagement with the professor.
