More than 10,000 acres of maize, sorghum and pasture has been invaded by Armyworms in Muhoroni.

The outbreak which is now extending to better parts of Kisumu has threatened massive crop destruction posing food security crisis in the coming days.

County Executive Member for Agriculture Gilchrist Okuom has since convened an emergency meeting in a move to put measures to curb further spread of the worms.

Okuom pleaded with farmers to take the first step of purchasing the necessary pesticides to control the worms as they devise ways of curbing the spread.

He also called upon the national government to help create control measures and as well assist the county government in finance the mitigation process.

“We call upon the national government to help spearhead mitigating measures that will require hefty spending in terms of resource mobilization from the national treasury and other development partners in their entire region,” he said.

Okuom cited that unless something is done to contain the worms then the county could face food security issues as their will be low produce.

“This is we are working on how to devise ways and means of working with our development partners even as we go about conducting training in all the wards teaching farmers how best to counter worm attacks,” said Okuom.

Other affected areas include Miwani, Nyando and Nyakach.
