Azimio Presidential candidate Raila Odinga has called for establishment of inland fuel depots.

The Orange Democratic Movement leader said it is too dangerous to have a single depot in Mombasa.

According to Raila, having one depot in Mombasa could plunge the country into crisis should there be a security threat in the area.

An enemy can just come and go down to Mombasa and bomb your reserve at the port, and the country becomes completely paralysed

“This country needs to address issues of strategic reserves at the inland,” said Raila.

“An enemy can just come and go down to Mombasa and bomb your reserve at the port, and the country becomes completely paralysed,” he added.

He furthered: “We need to do this as a matter of agency. Have strategic reserves where you are not vulnerable.”

Raila spoke on Wednesday when he met stakeholders in the fuel industry in Nairobi following the ongoing fuel crisis.

He asked the government to work with the stakeholders in the sector to come up with a proper roadmap to tackle similar crisis in future, and not to respond to it as an emergency.

The former Energy Minister asked the government to continue cushioning Kenyans from the high cost of the product.
