“Show me your husband,” this is the question unmarried women should be asked before voting them into Women Representative positions.

This is according to Mary Ojode, the widow to former Internal Security Assistant Minister Orwa Ojode whose utterances have sparked mixed reactions across social media.

In a video going round in social media, which was allegedly captured during a public event in Homa Bay County, Ms Ojode is heard urging the area residents to shun the unmarried women seeking the position.

It was however not clear who was targeted by her utterances.

“Article 97 of the Constitution has created the position of Women Representative. Woman is not a girl, hence if you are not married, keep off because it is not Girl Representative, but Women Representative,” she is heard saying in the video.

According to Ms Ojode who is eying Homa Bay County Woman Representative, the position can only be held by women who are brave enough to face marriage.

“If you have given birth to a girl, she will remain a girl despite hitting 100 years of age as long as she is not married,” she said.

She claimed that the risk of electing unmarried women is that they could be married in a different county, and go with her office.

“Therefore this position is for women and not girls, and those who are seeking for this position must show us their husbands,” she said amid applause from the crowd.
