The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has nabbed a police officer in Kisumu for allegedly demanding and receiving a Sh15,000 bribe to block the prosecution of a suspect in a drug-related case.
The January 28, operation saw Sergeant Gilbert Kiama Oduor attached to Mamboleo Police Post arrested by EACC officers moments after he received the bribe at the Winam Law Courts.
According to the Commission, the arrest followed a complaint from a member of the public whose relative, John Oluoch, had been arrested despite no illegal substance being recovered from his home.
The commission revealed that police officers from Mamboleo Police Post, accompanied by the area chief, had conducted a raid at Oluoch’s residence on January 23, 2026 on suspicion of bhang possession.
Although the operation yielded no contraband, Oluoch was arrested and booked at the police post.
EACC officers established that when the complainant followed up on the arrest, they were referred to Sergeant Kiama, who allegedly demanded Sh15,000 to ensure the suspect would not be arraigned in court.
Further findings showed that while Oluoch remained in custody between January 23 and January 28, officers allegedly allowed him to solicit money from relatives to raise the demanded bribe.
The complainant later reported the matter to EACC, prompting an undercover operation that culminated in Sergeant Kiama’s arrest as he received the cash at the Winam Law Courts.
The suspect was subsequently booked at the Railways and Ports Police Station in Kisumu, processed, and later released on police bond pending the completion of investigations.
Confirming the arrest, EACC Nyanza Regional Coordinator Abraham Kemboi said the officer will be charged with receiving a bribe contrary to Section 6 as read with Section 18 of the Bribery Act, No. 47 of 2016.
“He was processed at Railways Police Station and released on police bond as investigations continue,”Said Kemboi.
The Commission has warned public officers against engaging in corrupt practices, reiterating its commitment to stamping out bribery at public service delivery points to enhance access to justice and quality services for citizens.
