The video is of Gachagua addressing the former interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i during a fundraiser in Kisii County on 15 October 2020.
This post on X accompanied with a video of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua supposedly admonishing President William Ruto is missing context.
The caption on the video reads: “Ruto Ujue Power is temporary. Kiburi itaisha tu”, loosely translated as “Ruto be aware that power is temporary and it will come to an end.”
The video accompanies a post that translates to:“You will hear some people saying this video of Rigathi is edited. They will not believe!”
Gachagua’s speech, which is in Swahili, translates to: “When Uhuru Kenyatta became president, he gave you a job, and now you have become a big man, you have become proud and are thumping your chest. Were the whites not here? Didn’t they leave? Power is very temporary. When given power, use it to help people.”
Uhuru Kenyatta was Kenya’s fourth president who served for two presidential terms from August 2013 to August 2022, before Ruto, his deputy, succeeded him.
While Gachagua does not mention whom he is addressing in the 22-second clip, the video’s caption claims that it is directed at Ruto.
The video was shared after Gachagua claimed he was not consulted over the removal of the party’s secretary general, and amidst reports of discord within the ruling UDA. Gachagua had denied speculations of discord back in May 2024 but it was later established that the bad blood escalated.
To confirm the authenticity of the allegations in the video, Lake Region bulletin conducted a reverse search of keyframes from the video using the InVid tool. The search revealed that the original video footage was published by Nation three years ago on 15 October 2020.
In the original clip, Gachagua, who was by then the Member of Parliament for Mathira constituency, was addressing former interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i during a fundraiser on 15 October 2020 in Kisii county.
Ruto’s visit to the region, had been marked by clashes between ODM youth and Ruto supporters which the then deputy president had termed as attempts aimed at blocking his presidential bid.
