The long-awaited Sh2.5 million fish processing facility at Jubilee Market is ready for use.

Atleast 50 fish mongers will now benefit from the fish processing and storage facility which will also act as a point of sale for fish.

The project began last year under the Agriculture Sector Development Support Programme II.

“This project will help improve efficiency in fish handling, processing, productivity, and income of fish mongers”

A project of the same worth is also completed in Obunga fish market.

The Sh25 million five-year support program is financed by the Government of Kenya (National and county Governments), the Government of Sweden (SIDA), and the European Union (EU).

Congestion

Speaking during the commissioning of the facility on Thursday, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said the project will help ease congestion as well as improve public health and sanitation in the market.

The waste particularly fish scales will be disposed of by youths who will use them as ingredients for fish feed formulation

“This project will help improve efficiency in fish handling, processing, productivity, and income of fish mongers,” said Nyong’o.

While urging the fishmongers to be good custodians of the facility Nyong’o said the waste from the plant will be to make fish feeds.

“The waste particularly fish scales will be disposed of by youths who will use them as ingredients for fish feed formulation,” he said.

To complete the value chain the Governor pledged to construct a fish frying area and provide stoves to the fishmongers.
