A third-year Maseno University student was on Monday evening shot dead during Azimio la Umoja protests.

William Mayange, an Education student was pronounced dead on arrival at Coptic Hospital having suffered a bullet wound on his neck.

According to preliminary reports by the police, the student was shot after protesters invaded Maseno Police Line.

The cops used live bullets to disperse the rowdy youths and protesters who had overpowered them.

They (students) overpowered the officers who were manning the station. The officers had run out of teargas canisters

Police Report

In a viral video seen by Lake Region Bullletin, the deceased can be seen alongside other students while picketing before he suddenly drops to the ground.

Vandalism

At least 10 houses were allegedly vandalised during the anti-government protests.”The students lit bonfires and barricaded Kisumu-Busia road using stones,” the report read in part.

“They (students) overpowered the officers who were manning the station. The officers had run out of teargas canisters,” it added.

It is unfortunate that instead of using tear gas or rubber bullets, the police chose to fire live ammunition at the students

Anyang’ Nyong’o

Before invading the police station, the protesters allegedly stormed a local supermarket.

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o has condemned the incident calling for law enforcement officers to exhibit professionalism while quelling riots.

“It is unfortunate that instead of using tear gas or rubber bullets, the police chose to fire live ammunition at the students,” said Nyong’o.

“As we send messages to the family of the slain student and the Maseno University fraternity, we demand that the police officer who fired the killer bullet be arrested and prosecuted as soon as possible,” he furthered.
