The National Hospital Insurance Fund has published new regulations seeking to allow men to get medical cover for multiple wives.

The current law only allows for a cover for one spouse and a maximum of five children.

If parliament approves the law, then the male members will pay an extra Sh.500 for the additional.

The rate of the additional contribution referred to in the regulation shall be five hundred shillings in respect of each spouse

Those with two or more wives are usually forced to have another cover for the second wife.

“The rate of the additional contribution referred to in the regulation shall be five hundred shillings in respect of each spouse,” read the statement.

Increased rates

In the new clause NHIF is also seeking to have workers earning more than Sh.100,000 per month pay more in monthly contributions.

The scheme now wants workers earning more than Sh.100,000 pay 1.7 percent of their gross salary to the scheme.

Currently employees earning over Sh.100,000 pay a fixed monthly contribution of Sh.1,700.

Workers earning Sh.200,00 will now pay Sh.3,400 and those earning Sh.500,000 to pay Sh.8,500 monthly if the new regulations are adopted.
