Security has been beefed up in and outside the Kisumu County Assembly building as the MCAs meet to elect the Speakers and his deputy.

A spot check by Lake Region Bulletin revealed that a multi-agency security apparatus, including regular administration police and the elite General Service Unit (GSU) have camped at the assembly.

No Way

A lot of restrictions have also been placed outside the assembly after the security officers completely cordoned off both Uhuru and Ogada Roads which are adjacent to the assembly.

It is only the MCA’s and the county assembly staff who are being allowed to access the assembly premises.

Today’s exercise has invited over 50 officers who have been deployed to maintain peace as the assembly has seen chaos in the previous past.

In 2019, chaos erupted following the impeachment of the then Speaker Onyango Oloo.

Speaker’s seat

The battle for speaker will see immediate former Speaker Elisha Oraro face off former majority leader Samuel Ong’ow in a neck-to-neck battle to become Kisumu’s third most powerful man.

Other candidates for the position include James Ochieng, Linda Ogweno and Victor Otieno.

The winner will be required to be elected with more than two thirds of the assembly.

Kisumu County Assembly consists of 47 members.
