Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has banned placing of political billboard within the city.

In a directive published in the local dailies on February 28, the Governor noted that political advertisements would undermine the forthcoming Africities Conference set for May.

Nyongo who invoked his constitutional powers in the directive indicated that the order was to take place with immediate effect and run until after May 25, 2022.

He also directed that “campaign materials be temporarily redirected to other parts of the city of Kisumu and that the Africities Summit advertising materials be erected within the central business district.”

The long awaited ninth edition of the Africities Summit which had been postponed to 2022 from last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic will be held in Kisumu from May 17 to May 21.

Nyong’o did not however give details into who will cover the cost of purchase of the advertisement spaces, and their erection, given that some politicians had already placed some billboards.
